Introducing Countdown Calendars

If patience is a virtue, my kids don’t have it. My two young boys are constantly anticipating exciting family events or holidays with regular inquiries as to how many days they have to wait until Thanksgiving, their birthdays, or our annual trip to the beach house. And who can blame them? The adult version may be crossing the days off the calendar, but the truth is that we all love to look forward to these celebrations. What better way to focus this anticipation than with a countdown calendar?

As with all of our Design Collective titles, this book saw its beginnings as I began to search around for a calendar and was disappointed with what I found in the stores. As the Acquisitions Editor for Stash Books, I just knew that I could not be alone in wanting to create thoughtful family treasures that weren’t constructed with synthetic felt and glue! My obsession began when I made a Christmas countdown calendar from Elizabeth Hartman’s fabulous tutorial for Sew, Mama, Sew last year, so she was first on my list of designers to include. For our book, she has created a Halloween version of this popular design.

And this is what makes these projects so addictive: each of the 24 projects in this book can be easily adapted to suit any occasion through the fabric selection alone (a fabulous excuse to go out and buy some novelty or holiday prints!). The calendars range from counting down an entire month, to just a few days, so you are in control of how much anticipation is appropriate. Straightforward instructions ensure success with whichever calendar you choose to begin with.

The occasions within the book range from a military homecoming…

…to Valentine’s Day…

…father’s day, Hanukkah, first day of school, vacation, birthday, and more! From the sophisticated, to more suitable for the school-aged set, each of these 24 projects is sure to create excitement. We have even included some more neutral calendars that can be used to commemorate any event:

There is even a chore challenge chart to encourage family members to achieve weekly goals (can you tell which project is next on my list to sew up?):

As with all of our Design Collective titles, multiple talented designers have contributed to this collection, so whatever the event you can’t wait to arrive, you are sure to find a design that you are eager to stitch up to count down to it. I hope you enjoy making and gifting these calendars for yourself, friends and family that help celebrate the joy of the everyday or the eventful.
