10870_Pease_ImageGrid
After spending both your time and your money creating a wonderful quilt top, it can sometimes be difficult to contemplate experimenting with a new quilting design. Stippling or quilt-in the-ditch may have become your default. Sure, stippling is a flexible and textural design and stitching in the ditch can enhance the clean lines of modern quilts, but the talented Bethany Pease, author of Modern Quilting Designs, will inspire you to break out of your comfort zone.
scrolls.vines

Bethany has included over 90 original designs to get you started on your road to enhancing your quilt tops with organic and creative free-motion quilting patterns. From pebbles to waves, to vines and more, Bethany has created all-over designs, borders, blocks, and fillers so that you can create a quilting design that complements your top.

Bethany often finds the inspiration for her quilting in nature. She shares her tips and techniques for translating interesting patterns into effective designs.

Lately, my go-to quilt design is a swirly/snowy kind of thing. I’ve been making quilted Christmas tree wall-hangings, and do the swirl around the tree to make it look kind of snowy. I’m definitely a fan of moving a way from stippling and straight-line quilting, though!

This looks like a GREAT book! My favorite quilting patterns are ones that I don’t have to mark – if I can figure out a way to make them come out evenly. My signature quilting stitch is a wavy line diagonally across blocks that looks sort of like a cookie cutter pattern on the back.

I love learning new free motion patterns of any kind and then relate them to a theme in my current block. I mostly quilt quite heavily.

  99. Posted December 21, 2011 at 11:32 am | Permalink

I like any pattern I can do without breaking needles and thread! So I like the ones that are resizable so I can fit them within blocks. But I like to challenge myself too to do the ones that are difficult for me, but it’s nice to have some easy ones to throw in too! So I like free motion quilting, period. My fingers are crossed for this drawing! Thanks!

My favorite is feathers…course I haven’t tried to tackle them yet or anything else for that matter…I’m still stippling and in the ditch. It’s time to break out of that mold.

I’m still getting started with my own quilting so straight lines are my go to design. I’m hoping to have more designs in my arsenal soon.
